The "misty"
callsign
Here's how I came up
with the "misty" callsign(s).
I served two tours in Korea with the 25th Fighter Squadron. You
might see that squadron patch here in A00 from time to time. The
squadron employed A-10's You may have noticed what airplane I
usually leave on the runway--my favorite. Also, try to get it in
my wing patches with the "misty" patch.
Anyways, the 25th's main mission was forward air control (or FAC)
for F-16's assigned in Korea |
Real-life FAC callsigns are
"misty." "misty10" (pronounced misty one zero) was reserved for
the 25th Fighter Squadron's commander. Anytime that callsign was
used, other pilots knew who they were talking with. The misty
callsign has a rich FAC history dating back to Vietnam.

Click on "Where Now?" at the top to reference a list of all the
Vietnam misty's.
You may notice that I use four different callsigns
in the Korea servers.
They are |
selected from that misty list and represent
very famous men in aviation history (misty10 was selected
because of what I explained above)
misty6 was Dick Meyer (for all of you B-1 and B-2 fans
out there)
misty10 is the 25th Fighter Squadron Commander callsign
misty 40 was Dick Rutan (you may have heard of
him...non-stop unrefueled flight around
the world)
misty 86 was Ron Fogelman (I shook his hand in Korea when
he was the USAF Chief
of Staff... a great general!) |
