There are NOT many effective Dog Fighting Strategies, and this is especially true after the Jan/Feb 2009 game updates.  This page is a collaboration of thoughts from various distinguished A00 fighter pilots.  Misty is NOT the distinguished fighter pilot.  However, if I can present you with the basics and some theory, at least you have a Dawg-fighting chance.  Right?

Subject matter contributors for information on this page:  kidbatz, nasty, outbound, polecat and vapor
(hint: you might want to avoid these pilots in the air....smiles)

READY AIM FIRE
- YOU have to be ready.
  -- Alert and knowledgable.
- Your PILOT CHARACTER has to be ready.
-- Max out your sense level in Flight School
-- You might have to adjust your airplane to your sense level to get peak hit power (HP)
- Your AIRPLANE has to be ready.
-- Is it configured with the best set up?
-- The more Hit Points (HP), the better
-- Does your airplane mobility end in a "9"?
-- See "Mobility Analysis" on Status page, under internal equipment for your specific numbers
- Your INTERNET SPEED is a factor
-- Fast internet speeds are good, of course
-- Slow internet speeds can win
- Before aiming, have missiles pre-selected
  1) Patrol your wing or ally wing
  2) Lock on to a computer plane
  3) Select missile
  4) Fly to the arena or wing
  5) Lock on to the rascal you were looking for

- Alternate missiles pre-select method:
  1) Purchase new airplane
  2) Save missiles in Load 2 and/or Load 3
-- DON'T save any missiles in Load 1
  3) Before taking off, load 2 or 3
  4) Fly to arena or wing and lock on to rascals
  5) Land and repeat steps 3 and 4

Options:
1 Fire away and hope (not recommended)
2) Fire, assess jamming situation and keep firing if you are jamming the other pilot
3) Fire, jump to another sector, assess your damages, go back if good

4) Return to base -- don't land.  Some times you might think you were hurt bad, but!  You might still have missiles and the other pilot only "tickled you"  Save yourself time and a sortie.

Get it right:  It's NOT Fire-Ready-AIM!!!

Don't die...  LAND, if you have to!!!

For Your Consideration

Third Shot Theory The Best Fighter Aircraft? (Objective look) Defending a wing
Assuming both pilots remain in the same sector without any other pilots involved, which shot would be the winning shot?  The third and here's why.

Example with two F-22's (1100 HP); missiles hitting 380+:
(damage to each pilot in parenthesis)

Scenario One:
- Enemy first shot; you auto-fire back (380)
- Enemy second shot; you auto-fire back (760)
- You take third/last shot (1140  KaBoom!)
-- Or Enemy kills you if he takes 3d shot

Scenario Two:
- You take first shot (380)
- You take 2d shot (760)
- You take third/last shot (1140  KaBoom!)
-- Or Enemy kills you if he takes third shot

Example with two Su-35's (1200 HP); missiles hitting 380+
- You take first shot (380)
- You take 2d shot (760)
- Let enemy take third shot (1140)
- You take last shot and KaBoom!

Bottom Line: you must assess your damage and firing sequence, quickly, to win.
Everybody has their favorite planes, but...  Go to McCoy's Planes and study that chart.  Factoring Speed, Mobility, To-Air Accuracy, Armor and Hit Points, ... these are objectively/statistically, ...

The Best Six Fighter Aircraft
(you only have six shelters):

F-35A Lightning II *** Ticket Aircraft ***
Su-30MK

For those poor poor free play pilots (just hush), here are your best "Bang for the Buck" Fighter Aircraft:

Cost/total product="bang for buck"
(Listed only the airplanes with HP at least 950 and in ""bang" order))

F-22 Raptor (1100 HP)
Su-30MK (1150 HP)
Rafale M (950 HP)
Typhoon (950 HP)
Su-34 Platypus (1200 HP)
MiG-31 Foxhound (1050 HP)
See How to Bomb for advice on pattern bombing.  If you know the bomber is going to bomb in random patterns, stay in one or two sectors and wait for the bomber to return.  Rationale:  they might get 1-9 bombs released, but you will have at least two shots at them and possibly the 3rd and final while they are orbiting in their random pattern.

Ask your CO/VCO/DO to build up your wing missile defenses and especially the defenses in your wing's bottom row.  Make sure you follow through with defending because those defenses cost your wing credits.

Team fighting (AKA: clipping).  Do it!  And don't worry if the pilots you clip don't like it.  If they are dumb/risky enough to fly into two or three fighters, then they deserve to get shot down and Misty recommends they review this guide.

For all of those fighter pilots out there who would like to chase mega-bombers like silversnake, supremebeing, blackmamba, braindead or misty... knock yourselves out.  You will not have a fun time trying on your own and only a few can keep up with us.  Clipping IS about the only way you will get them.
